Caracas – Russia’s support for Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro is not only on the diplomatic front but also military, as was demonstrated on Saturday when two Russian military aircraft landed at the airport in Caracas, the capital of Venezuela.

The Russian state news agency Sputnik confirmed that Russia sent about 35 tons of military aid along with approximately 100 Russian troops who will assist the Venezuelan military with training. It added that this is part of an ongoing military alliance between Russia and Venezuela.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo strongly protested the Russian intervention in Venezuela and held a phone call with his Russian counterpart, during which he demanded that Russia end its support for Maduro, who he said is oppressing the starving Venezuelan population.
